“You sure this is a good idea?” Jake asks, adjusting my goggles to ensure I’m protected from any stray––or well-placed––paintballs coming my way.

“You sound like my dad,” I tell him as I shield my eyes from the midday sun beating down on us. “Do you have any idea how much begging I had to do so he would allow me to sign up for this?”

“For once, I think your dad and I are on the same page.”

Rolling my eyes, I nudge his shoulder. “Come on. It’ll be fun. Plus, we’ve got Henry on our team, and he’s a badass who’s been obsessed with paintball since he was like twelve. Now, if he would show up so we could get the party started…” I scan the sectioned-off putting area, now turned makeshift battlefield for today’s event, while attempting to ignore the opposing team on the opposite end.

The space is littered with bright green tarps hanging from tall posts, along with a few bales of hay and a handful of giant blue water containers used as barricades.

My excitement kicks up a notch. “Seriously, this is going to be so much fun. Where the heck is Henry?”

Jake’s gaze stays glued to me. He’s completely oblivious to the opposing team across the giant putting green, most likely planning our demise, as well as the fact we should probably start strategizing how we’re going to beat them without a team captain.

“Dude. You should help me find Henry,” I suggest.

“Henry’s not the one I’m worried about.”

“Is someone nervous?” I grin, glancing back at him, caught between an array of emotions ranging from flattery to anxiousness. Because he is worried. About me. I can see it in his eyes.

Gah! Stupid heart and its stupid reaction to Jake’s stupid off-hand comment. I shouldn’t care what he thinks or whether or not he cares about my safety. I shouldn’t care that I like the way he’s looking at me right now, with his eyes crinkling in the corners and his lips curving up with a secret smile. One I’m not even sure he realizes he’s wearing or how close he is to making me swoon from it.

“You should meet my sister, Bree, one of these days,” he decides, breaking our little staring contest. He squeezes the back of his neck and shakes his head. “Actually, never mind. That’d be a disaster.”

“Why? You don’t think she’d like me?” My laughter is light as I pick up my paintball gun and test the trigger while ignoring the stupid butterflies assaulting my stomach. When a hot pink ball blasts against a bail of hay a few feet away, I jump and laugh even harder.

“No, I think she’d love you, which is the problem.” His chuckle joins mine, and he grabs the barrel of my gun, aiming it toward the ground.

“Why’s it a problem?” I ask. “Come on. I thought you’d want your fake girlfriend to be liked by your family.”

“Fake girlfriend?” Henry interjects as he walks around the bale of hay I just murdered.
